Benson’s Disease or Posterior Cortical Atrophy, Revisited

چکیده

Background: D. Frank Benson and colleagues first described the clinical neuropathological features of posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) from patients in UCLA Neurobehavior Program. Objective: We reviewed Program’s subsequent experience with PCA, its potential for clarifying this relatively rare syndrome comparison to accumulated literature on PCA. Methods: Using original criteria derived clinic, 65 neuroimaging-supported PCA were diagnosed between 1995 2020. Results: On presentation, most had visual localization complaints related visuospatial symptoms, but nearly half memory followed by symptoms depression. Neurobehavioral testing showed predominant difficulty constructions, Gerstmann’s syndrome, Balint’s also impaired naming. retrospective application current Consensus Criteria 59 (91%) met a modification allowing “significantly greater over naming deficits.” There 37 deaths (56.9%) median overall survival 10.3 years (95% CI: 9.6–13.6 years), consistent slow neurodegenerative disorder patients. Conclusion: Together, these findings recommend modifying “relatively spared” memory, language, behavior include secondary depression, increased emphasis presence syndromes.

Type 3 GM1 gangliosidosis is characterized by onset around the second decade of life with slowly progressive extrapiramidal signs, such as dystonia and parkinsonism. Posterior cortical atrophy

Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome that is characterised by progressive decline in visuospatial, visuoperceptual, literacy, and praxic skills. The progressive neurodegeneration affecting parietal, occipital, and occipitotemporal cortices that underlies PCA is attributable to Alzheimer's disease in most patients. However, alternative underlying causes, including dem...

Phenotypical variation in Alzheimer's disease: insights from posterior cortical atrophy

To cite: Slattery CF, Crutch SJ, Schott JM. Pract Neurol 2015;15:2–4. Neurology, perhaps more than any other field of medicine, relies on a close association between clinical phenotype and underlying pathology. This is certainly the case for the neurodegenerative diseases where despite advances in genetics and biomarkers a careful clinical assessment remains the key to accurate diagnosis. In th...

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Posterior Cortical Atrophy and Alzheimer Disease

BACKGROUND Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a rare neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by early progressive visual dysfunction in the context of relative preservation of memory and a pattern of atrophy mainly involving the posterior cortex. The aim of the present study is to characterize the neuropsychiatric profile of PCA. METHODS The Neuropsychiatric Inventory was used to assess 12 ...

The cognitive profile of posterior cortical atrophy.

BACKGROUND Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a progressive dementia characterized by prominent disorders of higher visual processing, affecting both dorsal and ventral streams to cause Balint's syndrome, alexia, and visual agnosia. OBJECTIVE To define the cognitive profile of PCA and compare to the typical, primary amnestic dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT). METHODS The authors used ...
